Samaritans, a suicide hotline based in the United Kingdom, has teamed up with Facebook to create a more effective way for users to report suicidal activity when it is spotted on the popular social networking site. The hotline, which serves residents in the U.K. and Ireland, has 18,500 volunteers and is available 24 hours a day.
The previous Facebook feature, where users could report claims of suicide or self-injuring content, has been updated and now connects Samaritans volunteers with the site’s users in the U.K. and Ireland. The hope is that help can be more readily available. Though users are encouraged to contact emergency services if they see claims of suicide on the site.
